Cheapest Outlander

I had no desire to read this book. However, it was chosen by one of my book club members, so I was obliged to.

While I have many issues with this book - the man on man sex, the ridiculously written sex scenes (floating fishers, really?), the time travel that has no real explanation, the fact that it does not end - my main issue is that Gabaldon seemed to think she had the right as an author to reinvent the Scottish culture. First of all, there are no standing stones outside of Inverness (any fool who can google could figure that out). Secondly, Highlanders have a completely different accent than the one she gave them in the book, and yes, she did just write in one accent. Third, it has spawned an entire wave of American tourists looking for Jamie, the stones, etc. Do we really need another way to make Americans seem more ignorant? Lastly, in the 1940s in Scotland, the people of Inverness were not painting their door steps with blood.

This book would have been much better if it had taken place in a fantasy land. I could not get past the gaping holes in the author's education of Scotland. If you are going to write about it, take the time to learn about it.

Don't get me wrong. I have enjoyed a fair amount of fluff in my time. This, however, is insipid and should be burned.Get more detail about Outlander.
